L&N Day in Berea Berea Tourism hosted the annual L&N Day festival again this year with great success. L&N Day is devoted to celebrating and remembering Berea's railroad heritage and the company that started it. This year's festival was highlighted with a model train display and included booths from various participants from around the state.
One of this year's participants was Bobby Denny. Bobby
comes from a family deeply rooted in rail history. The Denny family
has been involved with the railways for over 200 years and is one of
the oldest known families to consistently work the railroads. Among
the family members serving the railroad are: Bobby's father, Wayne Denny,
with over 36 years of service and Bobby's Great-Great Uncle, Samuel
Denny, with over 57 years of service. When asked what he plans for the
future, Bobby says, "I plan to work on the railroad."

Another one of this year's participants was Wesley Ross, Coordinator for Kentucky Operation Life Saver. KOLS is a statewide program developed to promote safety at railroad crossings. Kentucky experienced a 100% increase in railroad fatalities last year. When asked what is the single most important safety precaution to avoid an accident Wesley replied, "Respect and awareness, of the all the fatalities last year, 60% occurred at crossings with flashers." Other participants included the NMRA Lexington Club and the Bluegrass Railroad Club. The day was also promoted by CSX as all trains were advised to slow down for pictures and observers when passing the Berea Depot. This was truly a full day for train enthusiasts and I highly recommend visiting next year.
